During his four year stint, he did all the right things and that meant immediately joining the Marines after graduation to put basic training behind himself before entering officer training. He then went on to receive Ranger training as well before deployment. This may look gung ho and all that but it is also the best survival strategy and the best way to prove up a career in the military. If you can do it and of course, he could.
Then he was shot through the thigh. He recovered, but i would lay odds that his physical performance then fell below the necessary standard. After all you must be able to maintain a fast run and also hump one hundred pounds for an hour at a jog with your platoon. I have done it and you need young unscared thigh muscles. You cannot even think of limping.
Considering his promising career and the actual interest by a legendary commander to take him under his wing, this must have been a bitter pill, although no one has ever said it.
His leaving rank was captain as with most capable four year officers. Nothing unusual here. I am reminded of just how many smart capable young officers we have chewed through in the two great world wars. I do not think that Britain ever really recovered from that loss and the same holds true for Germany and Russia.
