A century befre Ben franklin and his failed contributions to home heating. The Quebec colony had an imposible problem. winter waqs far too cold and your only fuel was split hardwoods requiring a massive investment in labor merely to still be miserable in your log cabin.
New england had the same problem but still enjoyed climate moderation at least compared to either the St Lawrence valley or the northwest Ohio country.
The solution was the invention of a wood fired space heater whose descendents we use to this day.
As it turns out, the fall of quebec introduced the cast iron stove to the british army and smugglers soon introduced them into the american colonies. This tool, literally made all of North america accessible for occupation.
I grew up in an one hundred year old farmhouse heated just this way. and you can still buy those stoves from the town closest to my old farm. Steady market for all those vacation cabins in Ontario.
I have wondered about the real history forever and here it is.
Before cast-iron stoves transformed Canadian homes, surviving winter meant feeding a fire that sent much of its warmth straight up the chimney. In eighteenth-century New France, families along the St. Lawrence faced a punishing problem: open stone hearths consumed enormous quantities of wood, yet left distant corners bitterly cold. Keeping the flames alive demanded constant labor, while smoke and freezing drafts made indoor life a daily struggle. The answer took shape at Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, where ironworkers turned molten metal into enclosed stoves designed to make every log count. The Canadian two-tier stove carried the idea further, routing hot gases through an upper chamber to capture more heat before they escaped. Instead of gathering close to an open flame, families could warm their rooms around a sealed iron firebox. #ironstove #canadianhistory #forgesdusaintmaurice #troisrivieres #quebec #stlawrenceriver #benjaminfranklin #engineeringhistory #industrialhistory #woodstove #historydocumentary #documentary #canada #canadainvention
