This "ETFE" Dome Costs $4,200 and Resists High Heat, UVs and Weathering. Why It's Ideal After 60!

This needs full on mass production support to hammer costs down.  Not least we have to stop any one oil company pricing it far too high.  this must be a strategic material and regulated.

The huge advantage is weight elimination which makes that dome construction viable.  A cement slab and aluminium cut stock to secure the pillow panels is obvious.  Throw in an elevated wood floor and you have it for conduits and fluid management.

We are not used to dome systems but the addins are almost natural  and can be safely mass manufactured..

Now iagine dome housing laid on a strip with a forty vfoot diameter which is greater than 1200 square feet. over one mile. This is well over a hundred family homes all on the same utility string.  obviously a way better design for a tiny home.

ETFE, or ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, is a lightweight fluoropolymer commonly used in architectural roofing and enclosure systems. It is known for being highly transparent, resistant to UV exposure, chemically stable, and far lighter than traditional glass. 🌤️ Combined with a dome structure, ETFE can create a bright, weather-resistant enclosure with fewer heavy structural components and potentially lower maintenance requirements. The curved shape can also help distribute loads while reducing complicated rooflines, gutters, and exterior joints that often become maintenance problems as homes age. We’ll break down where a $4,200 basic dome price could come from and what that number may actually include. A shell price is very different from the cost of a completed home. Land, foundation work, framing, insulation, doors, windows, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, kitchens, bathrooms, permits, labor, and utilities can all increase the final move-in budget. 💰🔨 So why could an ETFE dome make sense after 60? For many retirees, the goal isn’t simply owning a smaller house—it’s owning a home that requires less time, money, and physical effort to maintain. 👴👵 A compact dome can reduce exterior surface complexity, eliminate many traditional roofing details, and potentially reduce the number of areas that need painting, shingle replacement, or frequent repair. ETFE is also designed to tolerate long-term exposure to sunlight and outdoor conditions, making it interesting for structures where durability and reduced maintenance matter. With the right insulation, shading, ventilation, and climate-control strategy, the enclosure can be designed for year-round comfort while still taking advantage of natural daylight. 🌿❄️ We’ll also explore the potential benefits of single-level living, smaller floor plans, wider entrances, accessible bathrooms, simplified interiors, and easy-to-reach mechanical systems—all features that can make aging in place much easier. Of course, ETFE isn’t perfect. Specialized fabrication, insulation requirements, temperature control, condensation management, local building codes, engineering, contractor availability, and permitting can all affect whether an ETFE dome is practical or affordable in a specific location. If you’re researching ETFE homes, dome houses, retirement homes, downsizing after 60, aging in place, low-maintenance homes, affordable housing, alternative construction, lightweight architecture, or simple retirement living, this video takes a closer look at what this unusual building system could offer. Would you consider retiring in a compact ETFE dome if it meant less exterior upkeep and lower long-term maintenance?
