Death toll has been rising in the Venezuela earthquake tragedy. The twin-tremors that hit the region this morning has left its capital devastated. Residents fled into the streets. The government agencies are running emergency response operations

Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck western Venezuela within seconds of each other on Wednesday evening, causing widespread panic, building collapses and major structural damage in and around the capital, Caracas.

The epicentres were located near the coastal town of Morón, about 160 kilometres west of Caracas.

Residents rushed into the streets as buildings swayed violently, while emergency crews launched rescue operations in areas where structures had partially or completely collapsed. Authorities reported damage to roads, airport facilities and residential buildings, with search teams combing through rubble for survivors. Hospitals were placed on alert as officials prepared for a possible influx of injured people.

The US Geological Survey warned that the twin quakes, described by experts as a rare seismic doublet, could result in significant casualties and economic losses.
