I do think we are arriving at a consensus that places the sphinx enclosure to a time somewhat before the building of hte Great Pyramid around 2400 BC. This strongly suggerst a construction of some sort as part of the general funeral grounds and temples and plausibly a refurbishment contemporaneous with the Great pyramid.
Furthur back in time and you quickly preceded technical capacity and do not forget b that casing stones on the Great Pyramid took metal tools and those came from Lake superior. We have all that dated to the era. It is pointless to posit a separate historic era of independent construction when the elehant is sitting right there..
