In June 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, an on-device AI system that rebranded Siri into a more intuitive assistant. Yet in China, Apple's "revolutionary" move has barely caused a ripple. The risks go beyond theoretical concerns. Analysis of Honor's Magic 7 shows that it exploits Android's accessibility permissions -- a feature designed to assist users with disabilities. By bypassing traditional consent processes, Honor and some other Chinese technology firms gain access to sensitive user data in ways that remain opaque and unregulated.
Chinese manufacturers appear to have embraced these risks as part of the innovation process. While Western peers tread carefully, Chinese manufacturers and tech firms are already turning such capabilities into reality. The lack of a global regulatory framework leaves consumers vulnerable to potential misuse and even exploitation.
