the Old Presbyter - Text Reading and commentary

the Old Presbyter  - Text Reading and commentary

I was brought up in an unusual tradition that truly needs revisiting because it was consequential.  This tradition meant in my case, the example of my mother reading to us before bedtime from various reading material, but most prominently from the Bible.  This was often the only book available back in the eighteenth century.

Potions of the Bible are completely readable and even attractive.  Thus I heard the story of ruth many times and almost never the details of priestly laws.  The experience of others can hardly be much different.  Then i would have you compare those texts to the actual kindness of the words of Yesua speaking the Sermon on the Mount.

This practice needs to be reborn for all of us, but particularly our children.  ANd I also think it can be. Why should our children listen to adults talking to adults when they can follow and understand a lot of biblical material.  Adults crave commentary but children not so much.

What this did back in the day, was induce real literacy from folks who ever had more than six years of education at best.  Rather remarkable when you think about it.

This was a solid method to jump start universal literacy.
