Amazingly the problem is actually solved. It turns out that an Orca was observed killing and eating a Great White. I suspect that this is now common practice as well. Thus the Great White does have a hunter and one that is supremely skilled. What the Orca does is to ram the Shark, immobilizing it and causing it to roll over to present an easy meal.
No one could have made this up.
We also learn that the Great Whites will flee the locale
of such a hunter. This makes it plausible that the strong Orca
population along he Pacific northwest is likely sufficient to make
the Great White scarce there. There the Orcas rely on otters, seals
and the massive salmon runs.

Scientists in Australia tagged a
healthy 9-foot great white shark as part of program to track these
animals. Four months later they found the tracking device washed up
on a beach.Something—something really big—had eaten this apex
predator. But what creature could dine on such ferocious prey?
The recovered device showed a rapid
temperature rise and a sudden 1,900-foot change in depth. That's all
the information the scientists have.
