I do not know how particularly true this happens to be and stats can be terribly selective. Yet if that 7000 plant species and that 58,000 species of animal is actually valid, then this speaks clearly to the geological antiquity of the Penensula. This must also apply to the whole Meditteranean litoral as well.
What it also argues is lcal climate stability as well.
I wouod like to see this type of science extended elsewhere as much as possible to overcome location bias.
