This has been prospective forever. It is not clear what is new.
The design objective remains small compact and a similar energy system. We can build it, just as we can also build a steam engine. making something space worthy is way more tricky.
Yet space propulsion matters and chemical devices are only temporary Even for gravity ships.
Every rocket ever launched shares the same basic flaw.
Every rocket ever launched shares the same basic flaw. To go further, you need more fuel. But more fuel makes the rocket heavier, which means you need even more fuel just to lift it. It is a mathematical trap that has limited space exploration for decades. France just figured out how to bypass it. They built an engine that runs entirely on electromagnetic plasma. https://lnkd.in/g5TmzZgE
https://lnkd.in/gKMm6JRr https://lnkd.in/gdv-f6_X https://lnkd.in/gwbXhgra No combustion. No massive propellant tanks. Not a single moving mechanical part to break down in the vacuum of deep space. It accelerates ionized plasma through magnetic fields, requiring only electricity to produce continuous thrust. The implications change everything. Satellites can now maneuver indefinitely. Deep space probes no longer have a hard distance limit based on the size of their fuel tanks. We have spent half a century hauling tonnes of explosive liquids into orbit just to push things forward. That era is finally closing. ----------- To clarify the "no fuel" aspect: while traditional chemical rockets require massive, heavy tanks of liquid hydrogen and oxygen to create explosions, plasma engines rely on electrical power (usually gathered via solar panels) to ionize trace amounts of gas. Because they accelerate particles using magnetism rather than fire, they are incredibly efficient. A plasma system the size of a suitcase can do the interplanetary work of a chemical booster the size of a bus. While they don't produce the explosive force needed to break Earth's gravity from the launchpad, once they are already in orbit, their continuous, gentle acceleration makes them the fastest and most efficient way to travel through the solar system. 📌 Sources and References:

📌 What France’s PEGASES engine actually is The post likely refers to the French PEGASES program. PEGASES stands for: Plasma Propulsion with Electronegative GASES Developed at: • Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas Official EU project summary: -- cordis.europa.eu Its innovation: •accelerating BOTH positive and negative ions • reducing need for electron neutralizers The project describes: • electron-free ion-ion plasma regions • magnetic electron filtering • RF acceleration systems -- CORDIS This is advanced plasma engineering — but still experimental compared with mainstream Hall thrusters.

📌 Why plasma engines are so efficient The advantage is extremely high exhaust velocity. Chemical rockets: • ~3–4.5 km/s exhaust velocity Electric propulsion: • often 20–50+ km/s equivalent exhaust velocity The French LPP source specifically states electric propulsion can reach: “up to 20 km/s” exhaust velocity with about “1/10th” the propellant burden. -- lpp.polytechnique.fr That means: • much less propellant needed • lower spacecraft mass • longer missions possible But the tradeoff is: • extremely low thrust

📌 What plasma propulsion actually is Plasma propulsion is a form of electric propulsion. Instead of: • burning fuel explosively it: • ionizes gas into plasma • accelerates charged particles using electromagnetic fields This is critical: • plasma engines STILL require propellant mass. Usually: • xenon • krypton • argon • iodine
