rose granite Columns at Baalbek

what makes this important is that this granite came from Aswan and is surely contemporaneous with the Great Pyramid.  The weight is around 800 tons, but the local use of huge blocks easily surpasses that weight.

It is possible that they used water locks in order to lift and move those blocks locally but the columns had to climb a significant elevation to reach Baalbek.  Thus actually dragging them up a slope remains plausible.  The secret is getting the cordage to full tension, then charging it for a distance.

Most likely what is left  - the larger blocks in situ - is just too much although work stopped before attempted removal.  At least we know what they could attempt.

The columns themselves were also turned to provide and excellent finish.

this would have happened at Aswan.  Again a rotating horizontal lathe would be used and rollers used to grind own the uneven surface.

Way more important than any of this is that it confirms heavy shipping between Aswan and Lebanon which fully confirms the plausibility of bringing cants back from Lebanon.  Those cants were necessary to build the Great Pyramid.  All this tells us that the original building of Baalbek and the Great Pyramid were contemporaneous.

It is worth recalling that the big problem in shipping by sea is counter trade.  A ship is built in order to go back and forth for decades even.  that means locating one such trip immediately begs what happened for the other hundred trips or so.  Thus cants for valuable granite works wonderfully.
