Mosquito Tips and Myths

This commercial report came in..  It is heat activated and it appears to produce an exclusion zone using some form of chemical that mosquitos avoid.  This can actually be good enough.  They quote twenty feet, but placing one on the forward two corners of a sun deck would work fine with more as required.

This can be as effective as mosquito netting.  You would set it all up and then wait for the heat to do its job of filling the work area. all good.

  .
Again this is simple enough and the increase to a twenty foot reach whatever that actually merans is still good enough to anticipate a closed working zone for several people.

Reaching out to introduce myself. I just started working with Thermacell - developer of area mosquito repellents - and wanted to let you know that we are available as a resource for any stories you may be working on around mosquitos. As we approach the heart of mosquito season, we can provide insights into the science behind repelling mosquitos, myths (and tips) about mosquitos, and a more in-depth look at how our products are able to provide up to a 20-foot protection zone. We also have some really cool details to share about how we test our products. Our in-house entomologist is full of knowledge and happy to provide insight for your stories. I included some of his mosquito myths and tips/insights below.

I also included the press release around the new E55 repellent device we just announced.

Mosquito Tips and Myths

Tips/Insights:

1. Mosquitoes are not strong fliers! Outdoor fans or breezy weather can help to reduce mosquito exposure.

2. Working out outside can make you more attractive to mosquitoes due to increases in body temperature, CO2 exhalation, and other chemical odorants.

3. Mosquito/Bug Zappers often don't actually cut down on mosquito exposure; they draw in more mosquitoes than they can reliably kill.

4. Avoid fragrant flowery scents when concerned about mosquito exposure. Although female mosquitoes feed on blood, all mosquitoes feed on nectar, so a female mosquito may first be attracted to someone because they are trying to feed on nectar!

5. Avoid dawn and dusk hours outside without mosquito protection. This time period is often when mosquitoes are the most active.

6. Make sure to avoid having standing water around your yard for longer than a couple of days at a time. If you have a birdbath or similar water feature, try to dump out the water and refill them at least once a week!

Myths:

1. Citronella candles/torches protect you from mosquito exposure. This is only true if you are directly in the smoke of the candle/torch.

2. Mosquitoes prefer certain blood types to feed on. Although it has been shown that type O blood individuals are more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes, this is likely due to other factors about that person that attract the mosquito to them in the first place.

3. Most mosquitoes carry diseases. Some species are able to transmit more diseases than others, but there are a small fraction of a mosquito population that actively harbors a disease (most mosquitoes are not carrying diseases).

4. Bats will significantly cut down on local mosquito populations. Unfortunately, mosquitoes consist of a very minor percentage (<1%) of a bat’s diet in the wild.

5. Scratching a mosquito bite will help it heal faster. This is both untrue and unsafe. This action does not spread out the inflammation or help with blood flow; it is more likely to damage the skin and require extra healing time/energy.

Thermacell® Launches Its Most Powerful Zone Mosquito Repeller Ever

E55 Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller Boasts Industry Leading 20-Foot Zone of Mosquito Protection

Bedford, Mass. (April 2021) –Thermacell Repellents, Inc., the leading manufacturer of area mosquito repellents, is today announcing the launch of the revolutionary Thermacell E55 Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller. With an industry leading 20-foot zone of mosquito protection, the new E55 provides an 80% larger zone of mosquito protection than previous Thermacell mosquito repellers.

The E55 builds upon the breakthrough rechargeable technology Thermacell introduced with Radius in 2018, but is now more powerful, faster to activate, and easier to use. In addition to the significantly expanded protection area, E55’s rapid heating function begins releasing powerful repellent just minutes after being turned on, driving mosquitoes away without any messy sprays, harsh odors or open flames.

The enhanced user interface uses audio tones and LED lights to let the user know when the repeller is turning on or off, when it is up to temperature, and how much battery life remains. The sleek, modern product design comes in five colors: Charcoal, Royal, Haze, Riverbed, and Blue, to complement the aesthetic of any patio or lawn furniture display. At only 3.75 inches wide, and 4.5 inches tall, the compact E55 is about half the size of a water bottle, so you never have to think twice about taking it with you.

“Now more than ever, Thermacell recognizes the need for people to gather comfortably outside,” says Adam Goess, Director of New Product Development at Thermacell. “The E55 generates an expanded mosquito protection zone so you can connect with friends and family without worrying about mosquitoes, or how close together you are.”

The Thermacell E55 Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller (MSRP $39.99) and long-lasting Repeller Refills are available for purchase at retailers nationwide including Dicks Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, Amazon and Thermacell.com.
