Boys lag behind: How teachers’ gender biases affect student achievement





I do not have a copy of the study, but the result is important.  It is that gender bias is important and really significant.  To start with, i do not know how you can avoid such bias.  Going through High School i noticed this effect in favor of hte boys.  Today we have the obverse happening.

My point though is that a personal connection through the teacher is very important in inspiring the necessary extra effort.  Male on male and female on female tends to work best in this case unless the teacher is specifically trained to pay attention.

I personally got lucky and my high school math experience was super charged at least a bit thanks to a prepared teacher.  I started working independently outside the course material

Abstract


I use a combination of blind and non-blind test scores to show that middle school teachers favor girls in their evaluations. This favoritism, estimated as individual teacher effects, has long-term consequences: as measured by their national evaluations three years later, male students make less progress than their female counterparts. On the other hand, girls who benefit from gender bias in math are more likely to select a science track in high school. Without teachers’ bias in favor of girls, the gender gap in choosing a science track would be 12.5% larger in favor of boys.
