Dershowitz: Media incentivizes terrorism

A core strategy against all forms of terrorism is to simply stop reporting what is completely unessential.  That also includes good data.  The point is to minimize thevalue of the action.

A plain statement that an individual blew himself up at such and such on the third day of May is ample.  What it does not do is turn the action into a propaganda effort.  A public service is met as the public needs to know just that.  All the rest is not their business.

Doing this throws the promoters out of the show.  This naturally reframes the whole dialogue.

Dershowitz: Media incentivizes terrorism

Harvard Law Professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz stated on Wednesday that media coverage of the Palestinian assault on Israel’s border on Monday “incentivizes and encourages Hamas” “by reporting in such a biased manner.” Hamas is the Iran-backed terrorist organization that holds sway over much of the Gaza Strip. According to reports, some 50 of the 60+ persons killed were members of the Hamas organization.

On Fox News, Dershowitz said Hamas uses “the dead baby strategy. You use children and women, you deliberately put them on the front lines, you make it impossible for Israel to defend itself without occasionally killing a woman or a child or an elderly person. And every time Israel accidentally kills somebody like that, Israelis grieve. Israel loses. Hamas cheers and celebrates because that’s exactly what they want. They want the media to show the body count. They want the media to show the dead baby, even though Israel tried everything in its power to avoid civilian casualties.”

On Tuesday, Nikki Haley -- U.S. ambassador to the U.N. -- defended Israel’s use of deadly force to defend its border at Gaza on the day that marked the country’s 70th anniversary of the founding of modern Israel and the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. When the U.N.'s Middle East envoy said there was no justifying the killing of more than 50 Palestinians by Israeli forces, several Security Council members called for an independent investigation. Haley placed the blame firmly on Hamas and said that Israel had responded with “restraint.” "I ask my colleagues here in the Security Council, who among us would accept this type of activity on your border? No one would." Haley said. "No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has. In fact, the records of several countries here today suggest they would be much less restrained."

Haley added later, "Moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem was the right thing to do" because it “reflects the will of the American people. It reflects our sovereign right to decide the location of our embassy — a right that everyone in this room claims for their own country. Importantly, moving our embassy to Jerusalem also reflects the reality that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. It has served as Israel's capital since the founding of the state. It is the ancient capital of the Jewish people. There is no plausible peace agreement under which Jerusalem would no longer remain the capital of Israel. Recognizing this reality makes peace more achievable, not less."

Haley then walked out of the meeting when the Palestinian envoy began to speak.

Dershowitz said on Wednesday, “Ambassador Haley was absolutely correct when she said that every one of those deaths is attributable to Hamas, and that every country in the Western world would have done exactly the same. … Israel did exactly what America is doing and the world ought to condemn…Hamas, and also the media that incentivizes and encourages Hamas to do this by reporting in such a biased manner.”

During the affray on Monday, Palestinians used kites equipped with explosive devices to be dropped on Israeli territory and tried to affix an explosive device on a fence dividing Israel from Gaza. After the incident Hamas posted photographs of the fallen terrorists.

A senior Israeli army spokesman admitted Tuesday that Israel failed to minimize the number of Palestinian casualties during the recent deadly protests on the Gaza border, and that some were hit by mistake. He added that Hamas won the PR war by a "knockout."

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, the international spokesman and head of social media for the Israel Defense Forces, admitted on Tuesday that Hamas won its public relations campaign to win international support by a "knockout." He said that Israel had failed to minimize the number of casualties among Palestinians and that some were shot by mistake. He made the comments during a briefing organized by the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). However, Conricus defended the IDF's response to the protests along the Gaza border. More than 100 Palestinians were killed and thousands more wounded, most of them were killed or wounded by live fire. Some of the dead and wounded were minors who were present during the protests and resulting fusillade. Hamas admitted that 50 of the dead were soldiers in the terrorist organization.

Tensions and violence had been building for weeks. The UN reported in April that at least 40 Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured between March 30 and April 25.
