Read this one slowly. The claims are astonishing. Once over on your sink and the sink is water cleaned for a year or more. The same story applies to just about anything else including fabrics.
This replaces cleaning products! I can not believe it is totally perfect but we all can accept ninety percent perfect.
The jaw dropper is applications to food preservation that is only hinted at here.
What happens if we spray is on ripe fruit? Does anyone have that answer yet? I do not expect miracles, but with a tool like this and a little bit of art, they do happen.
It is presently on sale in Europe and we all need to keep our eyes open for it.
Spray on Liquid Glass to Make Things Easier to clean and antimicrobial for Years and Can Increase Crop Yields
FEBRUARY 02, 2010
“SiO2- ultra thin layering” is the technical term for Liquid Glass.
The flexible and breathable glass coating is approximately 100 nanometres thick (500 times thinner than a human hair), and so it is completely undetectable. It is food safe, environmentally friendly (winner of the Green Apple Award) and it can be applied to almost any surface within seconds . When coated, all surfaces become easy to clean and anti- microbially protected (Winner of the NHS Smart Solutions Award ). Houses, cars, ovens, wedding dress or any other protected surface become stain resistant and can be easily cleaned with water ; no cleaning chemicals are required. Amazingly a 30 second DIY application to a sink unit will last for a year or years, depending on how often it is used. But it does not stop there - the coatings are now also recognised as being suitable for agricultural and in-vivo application. Vines coated with SiO2 don’t suffer from mildew, and coated seeds grow more rapidly without the need for anti-fungal chemicals. This will result in farmers in enjoying massively increased yields .
The np-coatings are in principle pure, flexible , super-durable glass, albeit at the molecular level. These characteristics can protect glass surfaces and add extra functionality to the glass surface , making it :
* Easy-to-CleanProtectected against aggressive environmental influence
*Protected against abrasion
* Hydrophobic
* Oleophobic
* Food safe
* Protectected against glass corrosion
* Anti-microbially protected (this characteristic has massive implications for domestic, healthcare and industrial environments )
This technology is now available for domestic use in
There is a company out of Florida, called AdSil and they make a ceramic coating, used on the Space Shuttle tiles and bridges, originally a DuPont chemical thaty had its patent expire. It is two chemicals when mixed together at room temperature and it hardens quickly into glass. They use it for boat hulls since fiberglass is somewhat porous. Also the glass or ceramic coating at 1-10 mils keeps air-conditioning flanges cool and reduces energy usage by 30% - that's huge in itself.
ReplyDeleteImagine coating all the buildings and spraying it on over solar cell films, or even on buildings, sidewalks, black top playgrounds, Urban Heat - Be Gone!
Also there are hydrophobic coatings which are used by hotels to prevent fogging up of shower glass, etc. also keeps water spots of windows and vinyl siding from sprinkler hard water.
Of course, the self cleaning glass products are great for coatings for stainless fast food restuarant counters, hospital TV remotes (MRSA virus), and institutional kitchens. We've come a long way in these technologies, and I enjoyed your commentary here.
What is rather interesting is I have coated many a glassware and plastic since 1977 with silicon dioxide to prevent nucleic acid and protein adherence and subsequent loss.
ReplyDeleteLater on it was determined siliconized glass beads could speed up chemical and enzymatic reactions by decreasing reaction volumes which increased both yield per unit volume and reaction speed --- though truthfully this explanation never made much sense to me. Still the phenomenon held true.
But the silicon dioxide was considered toxic,somewhat volatile and we did all coatings in a fume hood whether liquid applied or vacuum applied.
So I am somewhat surprised at the consumer spray on application.
At last a "technology" that add value to almost every type of business :from logistics to healthcare, construction to agriculture. It should be noted however that there are over 400 companies working with smart fluids and each and every one adds unique value and risk. Follow the debate on twitter with nanolabone
ReplyDeleteThere is plenty left unsaid here, not least how thinness is achieved.
ReplyDeleteI have been exposed to a handful of those 400 fluids and concur.
However, nanoscaled SiO2 appears to be naturally attractive in itself from a consumer viewpoint because of simple familiarity.
Yet nanoscale for anything opens pandora's box for scientific surprise.
