For example: he 'claims' that Joseph Smith JR stated that the US Constitution would some day '...be hanging by a thread..." Author says that modern TV media type agree with this prophecy made by Smith JR about 180 years ago. That's interesting.

Then the author claims that Smith JR declared that the US Constitution at that time would be '...saved by a Mormon being elected president." That is a very curious claim indeed! And the reference used by the author was what? As someone who has done extensive reading on LDS history, I have NEVER come across such a bold claim. Rather, what I have come across is that at some point in the future the US Constitution would be hanging by a thread and IF IT were to be saved it would be by LDS members and (other like minded people) who treasure the US Constitution. I have never come across anything that would suggest that Joseph Smith JR believed that a Mormon would be elected US President nor that the saving of the US Constitution was based upon a Mormon being elected to the White House. There are, however, numerous predictions LDS leaders that the US Constitution would need to be saved and that members of the LDS Church would be key in its preservation.

I can only assume that anyone who sought out an 'ex-Mormon pastor' (Mormons do not have 'pastors' so that is confusing right there) for information on Mormons. (Biased source of information???) And the author uses profanity to express himself at his shock. He seems stunned that Mormons believe that they have the 'one true church' but surprise, surprise so most of the other religious groups -- Islam, Catholics (just this past month the Pope issued a summery of beliefs that it IS the only true church), Judism (and within those sects there are some really extreme exclusive beliefs), why even Pres. Obama's 20 year church under J. Wright JR believes that God is on "their side".

I can like the poster before me only conclude that the author never intended to be taken seriously about his writings on Mormonism and US presidency. His writings lack historical accuracy, it has coarse exclamatory language, and it lacks any objective journalist standards. With that in mind, I can only conclude that this was designed to stir the pot of contempt much like the 19th Century hysterical print writers did. The NY Times in the 19th Century claimed Mormon women were leaping out of the windows of the Salt Lake City Mormon Temple from the third story, diving into the Great Salt Lake, and swimming to safety. Just a few problems with this kind of fabricated stories -- none of was true and, in fact, it was impossible to have been done. 1) the windows are too narrow; 2) no reports ever existed of such escapes; 3) the Great Salt Lake is miles from the LDS Salt Lake City Temple; and 4) if one swam to the other side of the Great Salt Lake one would STILL be in the state of Utah. But stupid readers are willing to believe anything and the NYTimes of the day knew it so FACTS and honest reporting didn't matter.

Again, I can only conclude from reading this article that like the NY Times of the 19th Century fanciful stories on Mormons that this article should be read as humor. Kind of like a fanciful bit of writing like Mark Twain and the Jumpin' Frogs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1752027331714385066.post-31199511909086596962012-07-15T10:16:06.054-07:002012-07-15T10:16:06.054-07:00This is such a biased article and written with fla...This is such a biased article and written with flamboyant language that I had realized it was not written for serious consideration but was done for comic relief. THANKS! I need a good laugh today.

The hysterical claims of reporting that Joseph Smith JR had a bizarre 'militia group' in the 1830s just cracked me up! This is when I knew that the writer had to be pulling our leg. Out in la-la land of history...oops! The author references his viewing educational films in his high school and thus I realized that this fellow had been short changed in his education as well. Poor soul! You see if one had been READING historical information rather than having mind numbing movie days while one would have realized that back in the 1830s many communities had their very own militia groups these groups came equipped with their own private cannons. Furthermore, way back in early America it was mandatory in many states that young men HAD to serve in a community militia. Or did the author's public education skip that bit of history as well?
And, the author didn't really cover just why was Joseph Smith JR running for the office of the US presidency? Nor, did he mention how many people used to run for the office because the common man actually believed they could do so unlike the political machinery of the 21st Century. Joseph Smith JR was running for office of the US presidency as a last resort to seek JUSTICE and FREEDOM as proclaimed in the US Constitution but which were denied the Mormons who were driven from one community to another, had lands and property stolen by the so-called good people outside of Mormonism, and who had been murdered once again by the good so-called community members who were not Mormons. Smith, JR had appealed for justice to lawyers, judges, governors, Congressmen, Senators, and even the US President. The Missourians were upset the Mormons because they were anti-slavery. In the City of Nauvoo, as the author failed to mention, Mayor Smith JR proclaimed that it was an offense for anyone to interrupt a religious service for ANY GROUP be they: Jewish, Muslim (yep! mentioned them), Catholic (yep! mentioned them). In other words, in the City of Nauvoo the community with its mayor practiced religious tolerance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
