Not surprising of course. The hardest thing that i can imagine anyone doing is to simply accept that your life is now to walk where Jesus takes you. That has often meant true martyrdom. We all want that much control over our lives at least. It is completely natural.
Yet a priest sets that all aside.
We live today in a world that has hugely embraced a form of secularism that depends on denial of the spiritual aspect. Unfortunately that is becoming frayed as the ill intended find ways to exploit the resultant vacuum. Once again sophists and apologists fill our space and set out to excuse any damn thing. This is the road back to organized barbarism.
Countering this is a living resurgence of true spiritualism that is been led by an underlying scientific reality only yet understood by a handful. The rest including most scientists continue to imbibe spiritual ignorance.
In the long term the priesthood was a huge role to play.
