First of our accepted model of a molten iron ball is complete and utter nonsense and only serves as place holder to sort of explain what is happening. And pole shift strongly indicates that it fails even at that.
My own conjecture of a molten layer of pure carbon acting as a slip plane around a hundred miles down is sufficient to produce the electrical system experienced as magnetism. The slow emergence of that slip plane would explain what happened in the deep past. At least this is a viable alternate theory to work with that has some support in the geological evidence..
In fact multiple poles would be a predicted evolutionary component of such a theory..
Ancient Earth had more than 2 magnetic poles
Compasses would have spun wildly during Earth's earlier years.
