This has been my primary argument from the very beginnings of this blog. All of humanity needs to integrate human activity with direct forest management. That does mean reforesting. It means forest grooming as well. And it also means active integration of trees into active crop land.
By this i mean mostly building crop land a round a double pass system for harvesting in which the back and forth allows the margin to be maintained with some overlap on the passes. Between these crop strips we have a narrow band sufficient to hold the root system of living trees running in a single row.
The strip perhaps fifteen feet wide also harbors the local wild seed bed as well to produce a nursery for pollinators.
With all this land productivity improves and forest productivity is folded int the agricultural matrix as well. Even if it is only wood chips.
A Look Inside the Grass Roots Race to Reforest the Planet
“Ideally, we have to find ways to preserve local communities and cultures, while immediately rebuilding deforested soils, wildlife corridors and protecting watersheds and old growth forests. This work is especially important in countries like Costa Rica where there still exist intact stretches of primary jungle along the coast which, in turn, influence the oceans and marine life, together so vital to the overall stability of our global climate”.
“Biodiversity is the specialization of the chain of life. Our strength and our beauty come from our bio-diversity. If one of the links changes, we don’t know what’s going to happen.”
