Your Polluted Office May Be Causing You to Feel Sleepy

Of course they are and it is not even about pollution, it is about oxygen content.   Too little space for proper circulation and scant access to outside ionized air that approaches been fresh.  All on which combined with a high carb coffee and lunch and you need a nap to recharge.

Open offices have helped a bit, but attention to air flow remains a mystery. Sadly we have not found an effective way to have open windows in many cases or it is reserved for the lucky few.

The good news is that the pending demise of the oil industry will allow external fresh air to become the standard and simple heat exchangers can keep a building flushed.  It is not impossible

Do you work in an office where people often need to go outside for a walk or frequently step out for a cup of coffee? Or how about that afternoon lull right around 2 p.m. when you feel like you need to take a nap? The air quality of the building you work in may be contributing to your drowsiness and researchers recently found that increased air quality could greatly improve cognitive function performance of workers.

Thanks to commercial energy efficiency measures that started in the 1970s to combat the rising cost of energy, many conventional offices nowadays have minimal ventilation. The airtight buildings elevate the concentration of indoor pollutants and CO2, and increase the potential for poor indoor environmental quality (IEQ), according to a new study released Oct. 26.

Researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Syracuse University reported that poor ventilation decreases workers’ cognitive function and productivity.

In addition to the ventilation rates being decreased in the 1970s, other factors such as humidity, the presence of chemical-emitting materials and other workspace influencers, and personal issues like job stress and allergies, all contributed to workers experiencing sick building syndrome (SBS) and other building-related illnesses.

Today there is an emphasis on sustainable design or “green” building. Commercial buildings are still being designed to be more energy efficient, but with enhanced IEQ. During the study, conducted for six days in November 2014, researchers exposed 24 participants to various simulated building conditions as the volunteers performed normal office work.

They controlled indoor ventilation with outdoor air, CO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are largely human-made chemicals emitted as gases from many products including those that might be in many offices such as paints, adhesives, aerosol sprays, cleaners, and air fresheners. They are characterized as having a high vapor pressure.

The researchers then conducted a double blind study of participants’ experiences in “Green” (low VOC concentration) vs. “Conventional” (high VOC concentration) offices. The latter environment was typical of many office buildings today. They also simulated an environment with high outdoor air ventilation rate, labeled Green+.

On their work days in the Green+ environments, participants on average doubled their cognitive performance compared to working in Conventional environments; cognitive scores for participants while working in Green environments were 61 percent higher than working in Conventional environments.

Throughout the testing, researchers focused on nine cognitive functions and found the largest improvements in the areas of: crisis response (97 percent higher scores in Green conditions; 131 percent higher in Green+); strategy (183 percent and 288 percent higher); and information usage (172 percent and 299 percent higher). All nine cognitive functions tested were significantly better in the Green+ environment when compared to a Conventional environment.

Besides adjusting the ventilation rates and VOC concentrations, the researchers decided to look at the effect of elevated CO2 levels, which is not normally considered a direct indoor pollutant. They added CO2 at varied concentrations for all test conditions while keeping the ventilation rate constant. For seven of the nine cognitive functions average cognitive scores decreased as the CO2 levels increased. However, they concluded that the difference in scores between Conventional, Green, and Green+ conditions depended on the building.
Researchers conclude that their findings could have wide ranging implications because the study was designed to reflect conditions that are commonly encountered every day in many indoor environments, including homes, schools, and airplanes.
