This is worth watching. Occasional magnetic field portals do open
between the Sun and the Earth's magnetic fields allowing injections
of energetic particles into our atmosphere and clearly responsible
for things like the northern lights. Some are brief in duration
while others appear to hang around, again conforming with our
experience with the northern lights.
They have been able to use old data to confirm an effective protocol
for discovering these portals so a new satellite is going up to
monitor them closely.
This will give us a much better mapping of the fine detail of the
earth's Magnetic field.
